DEMA 2024 Update: New Optics From Nauticam

While at DEMA we stopped by the Nauticam booth to ask about their latest products. Here’s what they shared with us.

Mid-Field Optimizer (MFO) Overview

The MFO-1 is designed to correct optical issues caused by using flat ports with underwater camera setups. When lenses designed for air are used behind flat glass ports underwater, problems like pin cushion distortion and chromatic aberration can occur. The MFO corrects the incoming light rays, improving image sharpness and contrast significantly.

Key Features:

  • Magnification:

    • Magnification isn't its primary purpose but is a side effect of the optical correction. Without the MFO, flat ports inherently provide a 33% magnification underwater. The MFO slightly compensates for the magnification loss due to corrections.

    • Magnification levels:

      • Nikon lenses: 1.2x.

      • Canon RF lenses: 1.6x (the lens itself already achieves 1.4x magnification, which adds to the result).

  • Improved Focusing:

    • Faster focusing with reduced hunting.

    • Usable focus range: 4 inches to 4 feet. Beyond this range, focus isn't achievable, though most macro subjects fall within it.

Compatibility:

The MFO-1 is compatible with several macro lenses:

  • 60mm and 105mm macro lenses.

  • Confirmed for the Olympus 60mm and the Sony 90mm. The compatibility with other Sony lenses like the 50mm requires further confirmation.

The MFO includes threads on the front, initially considered for stacking accessories, but currently, Nauticam does not recommend attaching additional components.

MSRP: $474 US

SMC3: The Next Generation Super Macro Converter

Nauticam SMC-3

The SMC3 is an updated version of the SMC1, offering similar magnification but with notable improvements:

  • Lighter and more compact: About one-third the weight and size of the SMC1.

  • Cost-effective: Slightly less expensive.

  • Improved working distance: Marginally better, enhancing usability across various macro lenses.

  • Increased compatibility due to its reduced size.

MSRP: $562 US

Other Nauticam Updates

  • Wide-Angle Conversion Port (WACP-1): Updated with a built-in buoyancy collar for improved underwater handling. While the optics remain the same, the newer version has a more streamlined design with rounded corners and improved balance.
