Emperor Harmoni Liveaboard Review: Diving Adventure in Indonesia's Reefs
When it comes to maximizing diving opportunities, there’s no better way than embarking on a liveaboard adventure. Life aboard consists of a rhythm of sleeping, diving, eating and repeating the cycle. Unlike resort-based diving vacations, liveaboards offer the chance to explore a variety of dive sites across a larger geographical area. With extensive experience diving around the world, I recently had the opportunity to explore Emperor Harmoni, a 157 ft (48 m) vessel based in Indonesia. Our itinerary explored the central and Misool regions of Raja Ampat, however, the boat offers other itineraries such as Komodo, and the Banda Islands depending on the time of year.

Vessel Overview:
Emperor Harmoni, one of two ships operated by Emperor Divers in Indonesia, is crafted from Sulawesi ironwood in the traditional Indonesian pinisi style. This vessel, launched in September 2022, is equipped with modern amenities and safety features, including two 400 HP Yanmar engines for enhanced redundancy. With a crew of 22 and a capacity for 24 guests, the ship offers ample space and comfort for diving enthusiasts.
Diving Experience:
The diving experience aboard Emperor Harmoni is exceptional, with typically three dives a day and occasionally a fourth dive depending on the location and schedule. Divers prepare for diving on the dive deck at the rear of the main deck where each diver has their own personal space and crate.
Emperor Harmoni ensures a seamless diving experience with its well-organized logistics and attentive crew. Three zodiacs equipped with 50 HP engines are utilized for dive operations. All dive gear is efficiently loaded onto the zodiacs at the stern of the boat, which are then lowered into the water by cranes. Divers are only required to carry their masks and meet the boats by the stairs at the bow of the boat, simplifying the process and minimizing exertion.

Upon arrival at the dive site, divers gear up onboard the zodiacs, and when everyone is ready, they perform a backward roll together into the water, ensuring a synchronized entry. Dives are limited to 60 minutes although on some dives we were given a little bit more flexibility. After the dive, divers remove their gear in the water and pass it up to the zodiac driver. Once the gear, including fins, is handed up, divers can climb the steps back into the zodiac ready to be taken back to Emperor Harmoni.

Once back on Emperor Harmoni, divers are typically welcomed with some fresh juice and are free to doff their wetsuit which is then rinsed and hung up to dry by the crew. The crew unloads the zodiacs and puts all gear back in each divers spot. Tanks are refilled in situ. All diving is nitrox diving. Emperor Harmoni uses a membrane system which consistently delivers a blend of 30% - 31% nitrox. The engineering crew performs all of the gas analysis for the individual tanks however guests are given the option if they choose, to analyze their own tanks.
Accommodations:
Emperor Harmoni offers comfortable cabins equipped with amenities such as air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided in the shower. Towels are provided and refreshed mid-trip.

While the vessel lacks a dedicated camera room, ample space is available for storing and charging camera gear, catering to the needs of underwater photographers. On our trip, we had 17 underwater photographers, each with a large camera system and we found plenty of room to store our gear.

Crew and Service:
The crew of Emperor Harmoni, comprising the cruise directors, dive guides, zodiac drivers, engineers, kitchen staff, cabin steward, and the captain, is exemplary in their service and professionalism. Guests can rely on the attentive and skilled crew for a memorable and enjoyable diving experience.
Dining Experience:
The majority of meals aboard Emperor Harmoni are served buffet-style, offering a variety of both Indonesian and western food options including meat, seafood, starches and vegetables. The crew is happy to customize meals for those with specific food allergies. While the food is satisfying, I wouldn’t consider it to be outstanding. Complimentary water, tea and coffee are provided, while other beverages are available for purchase via the honor system.
Daily Schedule:
The daily schedule on Emperor Harmoni follows a structured routine for diving activities and meals. The day begins with a gentle wake-up call at 6:00 am for a light breakfast before a dive briefing at 6:30 am, followed by diving at 7:00 am. After the first dive, a full breakfast is served. The second dive briefing is at 10:30 am, with diving at 11:00 am and lunch afterward. The third dive briefing is at 2:30 pm, followed by diving around 3:00 pm. An afternoon snack is available after the third dive, with dinner served at 6:30 pm. In between activities, guests have free time for rest or personal pursuits like reading or photo editing.
Additional Information:
Emperor Divers offers perks for repeat customers, including free room upgrades and free use of a large tank. Payment for extras can be made in cash (US Dollar, UK Pound Sterling or Indonesian Rupiah) or via credit card (Visa and Mastercard), with the option to charge tips to a credit card. Safety measures such as multiple emergency exits from the lower deck and no outlets in cabins to prevent wayward charging of lithium batteries, are implemented to ensure the well-being of guests.

Emperor Harmoni offers an exceptional liveaboard experience for diving enthusiasts, combining comfort, safety, and professionalism. With its knowledgeable crew, well-equipped vessel, and diverse diving opportunities, it’s a top choice for exploring the reefs of Indonesia.
