DEMA Spotlight: Henrik Borg Introduces Waterproof’s Newest Innovations

Waterproof: Pioneering Dive Gear with Innovation and Excellence

Waterproof, the Swedish dive gear manufacturer based just outside of Gothenburg, has been a cornerstone of innovation and quality in the diving industry since its founding in 1984 by brothers Göran and Björn Ehlmé. Over the decades, the company has evolved from a small family operation into a global leader, crafting wetsuits, drysuits, gloves, and accessories that cater to divers of all levels. While at DEMA, we had a chance to meet up with Henrik Borg, a product manager with the company since 1987, who offers some insights into Waterproof's storied history, standout products, and exciting new developments.

Henrik emphasized the family-oriented culture at Waterproof as a key factor in his long tenure. “It's just about family and doing what we love,” he explains, describing how the company fosters a sense of unity among employees, distributors, and customers. This hands-on approach extends to product development; despite overseeing global sales, Henrik remains deeply involved in research and development, often working directly with the design and service teams in Sweden.

Waterproof's catalog features several standout items. When we asked Henrik which products he’s most proud of, he identified his top three below. He emphasized that what he really enjoys is when customers come back to him and are happy with their purchases.

  1. Wetsuits

    • The W7 and W8 wetsuits, available in 5mm and 7mm thicknesses, are some of the company’s most popular offerings. Their semi-dry design provides excellent thermal protection while maintaining comfort and flexibility. Integrated pockets and streamlined designs add practicality, eliminating the need for additional accessories like external shorts.

    • The suits incorporate ergonomic features, durable knee pads, and high-quality materials that stand up to rigorous use.

  2. Hoods and Gloves

    • Waterproof’s 10mm hood is lauded for its exceptional fit and thermal protection, while their Ultimate Dry Glove System has become a favorite among cold-water divers. Designed for compatibility with other manufacturers’ suits, the dry gloves feature an innovative ring system that simplifies use and enhances reliability (check out the video below).

Waterproof’s D3 drysuit with built-in hood

Waterproof continues to refine its products with cutting-edge technology and diver feedback. Recent innovations include:

  • Evo Ring System: A redesigned dry glove attachment that improves ease of use and durability while reducing weight.

  • Advanced Insulation Layers: Inner gloves modeled after high-performance ski gloves provide added warmth and dexterity for cold-water divers.

  • Specialty Suits

The newly introduced rescue suit, developed for Norwegian first responders, blends elements from the D3 and D7 models. Built with durable Nylotec material, it features attached hoods, modified valve placements, and options tailored for full-face masks—perfect for demanding conditions. The suit has been purchased by almost half of Norway’s fire brigades and is gaining traction in both Sweden and Denmark.

Waterproof has built a reputation for quality and innovation in dive gear, offering products that cater to the diverse needs of the diving community. From wetsuits to dry glove systems, the focus remains on creating reliable and functional equipment. Reflecting on the company’s journey, Henrik shared, “The satisfaction comes from making people happy—seeing them enjoy the water with gear they trust.”
